The following resources and steps coincide with the Common Core Standards Seminar led by Tim Shanahan at the FI on Friday, October 26th.

If you missed the seminar, you need to review all of the materials below and write a 3-5 page summary and reaction paper. You will also need to download the text sample provided and annotate it for complexity -- areas in the text you feel would be potentially complex for middle school students.

If you missed the afternoon portion of the workshop, you need to complete the text annotation exercise. (#4 below)

1. Read and review Dr. Shananhan's Slide Presentation: The Challenge of the Common Core Standards

2. Read and review Dr. Y's Twitter backchannel reporting on Dr. Shanahan's presentation using the following search tag: #CCSSSem

3. Read and review the Today's Meet backchannel discussion of Dr. Shanahan's presentation: http://todaysmeet.com/Shanahan

4. Download the following sample text and annotate it for text complexity (i.e., mark passages in the text where you think middle school students might encounter challenges or face complexity and note why you think this).

5. Write a 3-5 page summary and analysis of the materials here and your takeaways from your engagement with them.

DUE: E-mail assignment to Dr. Lee and Dr. Young by Friday, Nov. 16.
